Cost Accounting Intern

Summary

The Cost Accounting Intern will support the Finance team in analyzing, recording, and reporting cost data to assist with budgeting, product costing, and process improvement initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience in a manufacturing or production accounting environment and offers insight into how cost accounting supports decision-making and financial performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary.  The primary duties include: 

 

  1. Assist in collecting and analyzing production and material cost data.
  2. Support monthly and quarterly cost closing activities.
  3. Help reconcile inventory transactions and verify accuracy of standard costs.
  4. Assist in variance analysis (material, labor, overhead).
  5. Support preparation of cost reports and management dashboards.
  6. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (production, purchasing, engineering) to ensure accurate cost allocation.
  7. Perform other accounting duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and meet the following qualifications: 

  • Currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Completed coursework in Cost Accounting or Managerial Accounting preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, etc.) a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with strong data accuracy and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
