Controllers Accounting Internship

JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
 
An Accounting Intern in the Controllers department will be assigned to one division of the department but have the opportunity to shadow other divisions.  Basic responsibilities for most Interns include entry of general ledger journal entries into the accounting system, reconciliation of accounts, and completion of various projects that may be assigned.  The function of each division within the Controllers department is as follows:

Investment Accounting: Assures that all financial activity related to the investment portfolios is accounted for in the general ledger.  Monitors the financial results of the investments and prepares financial and compliance reports, analysis and disclosures to meet all reporting requirements.

Tax:  Completes federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Performs reporting and payment of local, state and federal taxes.  Prepares estimates of income taxes and year-end tax accruals.  Assures compliance with federal, state, local and foreign tax laws and regulations.

Financial Planning, Reporting, & Analysis - IPS:  Assures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual’s investment products & services subsidiaries are appropriately accounted for. Measures, analyzes and reports on the financial results, business trends, and key performance indicators for investment products & services subsidiaries. Assists with external audit coordination and testing. Internal financial reporting to key stakeholders.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Actively enrolled as an Accounting major; must have completed/be currently enrolled in Intermediate Accounting course
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving ability
  • High degree of self-motivation and proven ability to meet strict daily deadlines
  • Proven ability to work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Displays a professional attitude
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and resolve routine problems
  • Basic Microsoft applications experience

HOURS

  • Part-Time hours (10-20 hours per week) mid-April, 2021 - end of May, 2021
  • Full-Time hours (40 hours per week) June 1 - August 6, 2021
  • Possibility of part-time hours extension after summer internship program, if qualified
