Brief Position Description for the Various Areas at Polk Library

Archives 
Students in the archives department help organize, catalog and provide reference service to original, historical records. Most of the work is independent, however strong people and research skills are required to help provide access to the materials.

Circulation Desk & Stacks & Interlibrary Loan
Greeting patrons, checking in and out materials, giving directions and explaining where items are located, helping with audiovisual equipment and basic computer operation, re-shelving items and maintaining shelving accuracy, scanning, copying, shipping, and collecting material from the library to provide to other libraries.
Desired skills: Punctuality/reliability and a willingness to help are expected. Good customer service skills, accuracy, attention to detail. Computer proficiency and the ability to learn multiple library systems and processes. Ability to work independently as well as with others. Work shifts schedule between 7 AM – 12:15 AM. Some weekend hours are Mandatory. A typical shift is 2-4 hours.  
Educational Media Center (EMC)
Staff the EMC desk. Greeting patrons in-person or on phone (students, staff/faculty, community members). Answering questions (primarily about materials in the EMC collection but may include others). Assisting patrons with finding materials in the EMC. Creating seasonally appropriate displays. Troubleshooting basic technology issues. Keeping the EMC clean (picking up trash left by students, cleaning shelves and tables, possibly vacuuming, etc.). Other duties as assigned. The EMC desk is typically staffed Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, with some night shifts as needed. No weekend hours are available.

Library Administrative Office 
Work at the library office involves punctuality and reliability, quality customer service skills, answering the phone, filing, Excel spreadsheets and Word documents computer work, and general office skills. Shifts vary throughout the weekday. Office hours are 8 AM - 4:30 PM weekdays only. 

Polk 101 Reference Lab
Student assistants at the reference desk primarily answer questions about library use, especially library resources in Polk Library and online. Since Polk 101 is one of the busiest printing areas on campus, duties will include refilling printer paper and troubleshooting computer and printer problems. In addition, students will re-shelve reference books, clean/dust in Polk 101, keep reference desk statistics, and other duties as assigned.
