Peer Tutor - Lake to Lake

LOCATION:
Lakeshore Technical College – Cleveland, Wisconsin

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lake to Lake Peer Tutor provides 1:1 tutoring as arranged through the Peer Tutor coordinator, assist in a lab setting, in the Academic Support Center, and/or study group facilitation which could be face-to-face or virtual. Peer tutors facilitate student learning by helping to clarify specific course content and promote the use of appropriate study strategies. Tutors conduct regularly scheduled one-on-one and group tutoring sessions throughout the semester, as needed and arranged by the Peer Tutor Coordinator. Peer Tutors do not provide answers to homework assignments, but work with students to model problem solving strategies and explain course-specific concepts in compliance with academic integrity standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Other duties may be assigned):
(100%) Tutoring
  • Adequately prepare for sessions.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Two to twelve hours per week, according to your schedule and the need for services.
  • Ensure that the needs of the student being tutored are met, assist with organization, study skills and tools.
  • Be punctual for sessions, patient and able to explain things simply and set goals and objectives for each lesson.
  • Study group facilitation provides direction and sessions.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of utilizing and searching the Internet.
  • Ability to conduct virtual appointments via MS Teams, BlueJeans, etc.
  • Excellent customer service. Excellent communication skills and teamwork skills.
  • Telephone etiquette. 
  • Background in Web Development 1, Introduction to Database Design & Development, Adobe Illustration, Adobe Photoshop, Introduction to IT, and/or Networking 1 preferred.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Must be customer-focused, accurate, and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form are a must.
  • Required skills include proficiency in spelling, grammar, and proof reading; skilled in typing/keyboarding.
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
  • Must be dependable and professional.
  • Exemplify college values in all staff and student interactions, as well as services delivered.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and relate successfully with staff, students, and people of diverse cultural, social, or educational backgrounds.
  • Fluent, bilingual individual is beneficial.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Prefer Lakeland University current student or graduate of LTC with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Knowledge of the scope and nature of programs and courses offered by the college.
  • Good understanding of the local community. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION:
  • Valid State of Wisconsin Driver's License required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
•  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
•  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. 
•  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
•  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

CONDITION(S) OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Employment conditional on completion of a Background Information Disclosure (BID) 
  • Valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license is required or access to reliable and flexible transportation to commute from one job site to another. 
  • Student success always comes first and it is expected that the student maintains average grades while employed. Failure to do so may result in their student help position being discontinued.
  • Students must be active and enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits pers semester and/or enrolled in an academic program.
