Fall Semester 2025 while A-T publishes (~12 total weeks), 6 hours per week

Pay: $10/hour

 

Description:

The Advance-Titan is an independent student-run newspaper (digital and print) published on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus since 1894. The news content is written and edited by students at the university, and they are solely responsible for content and editorial policy.  Any student at UW Oshkosh is welcome to work on the staff. The Advance-Titan provides students with opportunities to learn marketable media skills as well as create portfolio-quality work that will assist students in obtaining jobs and internships. 

 

The A-T is seeking an Assistant News Editor.  This position will serve as an assistant for the head editor and will provide support and augmenting help for the following activities:

 

Duties:

  • Story idea generation and writing news stories 
  • Recruit and assign stories to writers on a weekly basis or as needed
  • Attend weekly editorial staff meetings
  • Evaluate stories for news quality and need for graphics, charts, photos or illustrations
  • Edit written stories to comply with AP Style
  • Design and layout 1-2 pages for newspaper print edition
  • Prepare content and photos for web publishing
  • Work closely with writing staff to expand skills, answer questions and develop overall skillset
  • Work closely alongside other editors
  • Work with social media and web managers for content postings
  • Be up to date with campus rules and regulations
  • Frequently check email and respond to questions and requests as necessary

 

Experience/Skills Preferred: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Microsoft Word, knowledge of (or ability to learn) AP Style, time management skills, previous writing/editing experience

 

As an Assistant News Editor, the position holder will gain professional skills (and portfolio samples) that demonstrate an ability to assist the news editor in the assigning, editing and placing of news stories within the print and digital platforms of the A-T. Specifically, these skills include:

  • Demonstrating both news judgment and promotional efforts
  • Creative use of text and minor graphics in traditional and digital media platforms 
  • Learning ways to communicate with traditional and digital media tools
  • Management functions associated with the recruitment and maintenance of a staff
  • Collaboration with staff members and audiences
  • Learning how to meet the needs of multiple media platforms 
  • Interpersonal communication
